As the Pulitzer Prize entries fire up, the realization of how much a Pulitzer really means to an author came up in discussion. While I’d never specifically write FOR a Pulitzer, the concept of receiving one for something I wrote has been considered.
So, what value is there in winning a Pulitzer?
As a journalist, winning a Pulitzer increases your value on the career market. But, for a writer, with no real intent on writing journalistic, news story material? What point is there?
As a columnist, however, I consider my work to be viable for various awards and efforts, because my columns are good. Am I bragging, no. Am I stating that I believe I’m capable of writing Pulitzer quality content? Yes.
What’s the difference?
Writers must toot their own horns and believe they have something to offer, or they’d never produce a page of script. It’s called confidence, in those minor circles where we live. Some of us have more than others, and we call those writers “Balzy”. The impact of those Balzy writers, often changes life here on planet earth. Writers most often reveal white collar crime, we’re intense investigators of world issues. Writers reveal the angst of political scams and promote politicians to un-natural positions of power. Seriously, you think those jerks just arrive in power by themselves? Some writer deems a political figure doable and promotes the heck out of him until he arrives at the ultimate destination – White House, Washington D.C.
But what difference can a writer really make in life? Writers confirm and report history. Where would we be without the nuances of Shakespeare in our lives? Who on this planet has NOT experienced one of Shakespeare’s tales?
To be honest, I don’t particularly like his writing, I’ve never truly enjoyed reading his work, but I have to admit, his writing has impacted my life. How else would I have known that love is doomed to death, all roads lead to doom, or that girls can be boys in educational settings of power?
So, the question of the day… Does literary success depend on winning a Pulitzer or is there another purpose for writing great works?
