Marketing Your Writer Blog – Reader or Writer

April 3rd, 20093 Comments

Is your blog for your reader fans, or other writers?

When I started this process, I hadn’t figured out the options of blogging to a specific niche, and I thought I was doing it the “right way”. But then, after staging a coup on blogging, I realized I probably had the wrong audience in mind… Well, that and a few bloggers asking me about their own blogs. I know, it’s a dur thing and I should have had the concept well settled before I started blogging, but seriously, I was missing my target for a long time too.

So once you realize your target audience is Vampires and you’re feeding them salad, what do you do? Of course, my friend, you want to be careful that your neck isn’t bare before you do anything else, but I’d suggest you start feeding them a diet of very red meat and hope you aren’t their delicacy of choice!

Readers and writers are the same way.

If your content meets the needs of one, the other probably won’t hang around long, and you won’t be capturing their clicks, links or anything else along the way. They’ll hit the little X in the top right corner before they stick around long enough to figure out you’re an ALL THINGS GOES website. They want easy to find, ready to read content in their specific niche.

In the words of my favorite vampire, “Nothing else satisfies.”

So how can you define your niche with enough interesting content that your blog stays fresh and current, while remaining on topic?

  • Know your niche, inside out. This is most important. If your niche is book marketing for children’s books, know what they write and how to market their books. (Be sure you’re promoting to your audience.)
  • When doing Interviews, focus on the same niche. Ask questions about marketing books, what’s worked, what hasn’t, how to query a marketing source. Be sure you answer the questions your audience is asking you.
  • Be solution oriented. Focus on the answer to the questions your readers are asking. Tell them what they want to know. (I know you’ve heard this before, me too. But, this time listen!) Give your READERS what they WANT.
  • Your blog can be about you, but ONLY if you’re telling your readers what they want to know about YOU. If you’re writing a blog about personal habits and thoughts, share your personal events with your blog audience. But if your blog is about your professional life, keep it professional. (They probably don’t want to know who your latest love interest is, if they’re not looking for love.)
  • Remember to stay on target. This is a bit redundant, because I’ve said it before, but I’m going to say it again and again, until you GET IT. BE relevant, stay on target and don’t shift audiences in mid article. Your readers will get really upset about that.

Are you still wondering how you can write a blog that interests your readers and brings them back week after week to see what you have to offer?

Thanks, Jan. You must know your market, because you were talking right to me. It’s exactly what I needed to hear. I’ve printed this out, and going to make sure I have it on hand like a template…

Right on, Jan. It’s the one thing that was pounded home in my Tech Writing classes — know your audience!
